EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Volcano Awareness Month
I am featured in this video produced by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory explaining my work using photogrammetry to understand eruption processes during recent activity at Kīlauea volcano. Volcano awareness month is a yearly program run by HVO to connect observatory scientists with the public, update them on recent volcanic activity, and explain how the HVO staff monitors Hawaii's active volcanoes.
Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Hawaii Field Trip
I helped organize and lead a graduate student field trip to the Big Island of Hawaiʻi for LPL's planetary geology field studies course in Spring 2023. I enjoying showing the students some of my favorite sites around Kīlauea's summit and in the Lower East Rift Zone as well visiting classic sites such as Papakōlea (green sand beach) and some new locations led by other faculty. Students learned about recent Kīlauea eruptions in 2018 and 2020–2023, Mauna Loa's 2022 eruption, lava flow emplacement, and lava-water interactions. As this was a planetary science course, locations were placed in the context of analogs and planetary surface processes; it was fun for me to see familiar sites with a new perspective.
Earth and Space Exploration Day
In this yearly outreach event organized by the School of Earth and Space Exploration at ASU, I led volcanology demonstrations including a "trash can volcano" showing how the sudden release of built-up pressure drives explosive eruptions and how explosive products are distributed during an explosion (video below).
